Description of Work:
Between 8 weeks and 4 months, our golden retriever's play biting was out of control. At 12 weeks, we engaged a trainer who used an all-treats based method. Cooper got progressively worse. At one point, the trainer suggested we consider returning him to the breeder. Then a colleague recommended Mel McGrath. During Cooper's initial evaluation, Mel immediately recognized that his misbehavior was the product of his innate high drive (he is from a champion sporting line) and a complete lack of pack leadership, reinforced by the treats-based method.

Customer Comments:
Mel's methods are based on common sense and the ways dogs teach each other. It is no exaggeration that after one visit with Mel, we had a different puppy. Whereas we previously had no bond with Cooper, he began to actively seek our leadership and affection. We continued with Mel's program, and today, at 7 months, Cooper is an obedient, affectionate dog who frequently draws praise for his good behavior and calm temperament. As far as we are concerned, Mel "saved" Cooper by shaping him into the kind of dog he was meant to be. Today, we could not love Cooper more, and we are forever grateful to Mel.

Description of Work:
Mel helped my husband, sons, and I turn our neurotic, fearful and sometimes aggressive rescue dog into a wonderful, relaxed, and obedient household pet. The price came up a little higher than we expected because we bought a fairly expensive radio-controlled collar from Mel, along with the training needed to use it in an appropriate and humane way, but it was worth it.

Customer Comments:
We adopted Blake, a border collie-Australian cattle dog mix, in August. A couple of days after we brought him home we realized that the timid dog we adopted was quickly learning to try to defend himself from all the frightening things in the world, including neighborhood children, dogs, bikes, scooters, skateboards, vacuum cleaners, garbage cans and the coffee pot (don’t ask.) He also had zero respect for my authority and constantly mouthed my ankles and wrists to try to get his way (herding breed, remember.) By September he had bitten two (unoccupied) bicycles and the vacuum cleaner, and was lunging at people and dogs whenever he saw them on our twice-daily walks. When people came to our house, he barked non-stop for as long as they were there (which was never very long, needless to say.) The treat training suggested by the shelter, and the Gentle Leader head halter, were not enough to control him or change his behavior. We found Mel through the kennel where my mom has boarded her dogs for years. In our first evaluation session, he had Blake doing basic commands and interacting relatively calmly with other dogs. We didn’t have Mel’s "magic," but the remainder of our training sessions helped us to attain it. Blake now knows and consistently obeys sit, stay, down, come, heel, and "place," where he puts himself in his crate on command, is fairly good at his automatic sit (when we stop walking, he is supposed to immediately sit, but needs some reminding) and we’ve managed to teach him a couple of tricks on our own. Better yet, he is no longer insanely afraid of things. He walks through the neighborhood quietly, ignores the human neighbors, and is increasingly better at ignoring the canine neighbors. He barks some at the vacuum, but when told "place" calmly waits in his crate until the vacuum is put away again. On Christmas Eve, our last paid session with Mel, we took him to a pet store, where he walked through among people and dogs without any aggressive behavior. On Christmas we had 13 people for dinner, and yesterday we had another 11 and he did quite well even interacting with our guests and allowing himself to be petted by a couple of people. We have two free follow-up sessions with Mel, and will use them when the weather is a little nicer to teach Blake some off-leash obedience and commands. The improvement in this dog is unbelievable, and I highly recommend Mel to work with any dog, especially those with problem behaviors.

Description of Work:
Mel McGrath, owner of ParamountDog Training, worked with our Doberman, Ellie, to bring her to a state of mental balance. She was diagnosed by our Vet as having Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and has been on 4 different drugs over a 2 year period. Mel told us from the beginning that the drugs would not work. I wanted a "quick fix," or an "easy way out," so I did not listen. Finally, I gave in. We asked Mel for help. He already had an idea of what she was like from exposure to her at our facility. Mel prescribed a "train and stay" experience for Ellie so he could really get inside her head. He took her to live with his pack and observe first hand exactly what her behavior was like. What he observed was nothing like the dog we lived with. He quickly diagnosed that Ellie needed time alone, a place to go to in order to escape her stress. (We have 7 other dogs). He came to our house and pointed out possible places we could give to Ellie as her place. He also diagnosed that Ellie needed more one on one time with us. We are now taking her for car rides as much as we can and I am including her in my walks. He gave us key things to look for and stop, before she gets stressed, along with appropriate commands and procedures. Mel follows up with phone calls or emails to stay on top of her progress. How is she doing? Unbelievable. I am boring Mel when he calls because I have nothing to report. She is unbelievable. She is a DOG for the first time in her life.

Customer Comments:
Before Mel, Ellie would spin and bark excessively, constantly, when in the house. She would put her nose to the ground and appear to be tracking some kind of invisible mouse or something. She was extremely destructive. She always had to have material of some kind to chew on. She ate our couch over a 2 year period. Outside she was constant movement, running, barking and digging. When let outside, her feet never touched the porch steps, flying off the porch and starting her daily run around the property... barking. The drugs we had her on had no effect whatsoever. We were told to take her to Obedience classes so we did. I had over 3 years experience taking our other dog to classes. She was great while at class and while doing homework, but when done, would start her crazy behavior again. There was absolutely no relaxation in her, just full speed ahead until she crashed at night. I thought she needed stuff to do, when all she needed was some alone time, some quiet time. We have seen Mel work wonders on many of our Rescue Orphans. This however, was an issue that affected our daily life. Mel is unique, I believe, because he comes to each individual case with no preconceived opinion based on breed or issue. He assesses each case based on the dog’s behavior and body language, and the owner’s input. Mel listened to my husband and I and then took Ellie to his pack for a "train and stay." She is a new dog. We accused Mel of switching dogs on us. By simply changing some basic behaviors and furniture... we are all, for the first time... living in peace. The whole key here was Mel. Although the changes necessary were very painless... the diagnosis was not. Mel has a gift, a talent we have not seen anywhere else. We own a boarding kennel and we do dog rescue. We are not inexperienced in the ways of dog behavior. We have seen him with very aggressive dogs and very neglected dogs. We have never seen him fail to help the dog if the owners follow his advice. Our life? Nice, very nice. Mornings are quiet, all the other dogs go out first... then Ellie goes out... WALKS out, walks down the stairs... Ellie goes to her room whenever situations get too stressful for her. She sleeps late now, she used to always start barking at 6 am. Now we get up before her. She is fed alone, in her own room. She waits patiently and eats slowly. She actually WALKS around the house. She is at peace, which also means we are. Mel is more than a dog trainer to us. He gave us back our life!

Description of Work:
Trained my puppy. We had sessions at his center & sessions at our home. He trained the dog in all areas including getting along with other dogs.

Customer Comments:
Mel was very personable to deal with. He built the training sessions around our needs with our animal not putting us through a rigid program. He made sure we covered all aspects of training our dog. He dealt well with both my husband & I, as well as our daughter. I would recommend him to anyone, including my Mom, who will be taking her puppy to Mel when she gets one.

Description of Work:
I went for an initial visit to Paramount for dog training.

Customer Comments:
They were very good and very professional, but the formal training beyond the initial visit is a little too expensive for me.

Description of Work:
Obedience training for one year old English Bulldog.

Customer Comments:
I e-mailed Mel with our situation and he promptly e-mailed back. We set up an initial consultation for our son’s one year old English Bulldog, Buckie. Our situation was a little different as we are only babysitting our son’s dog on an intermittent basis now and don’t know if we will be keeping him more than the next week. Buckie has been back and forth from us to our son over the past month, so nothing has been consistent for him. We set up the consultation just in case we may be keeping Buckie for an uninterrupted extended period of time, possibly six to eight months. We needed help to have Buckie fit in with our older dog and two cats. He’s a sweet, lovable dog but way too much puppy and too active and dominant for our older dog. And the cats, well that’s another story altogether! We were absolutely amazed at what Mel was able to accomplish in the one hour session he had with Buckie. In fact, my husband and I just kept looking at each other in amazement that Mel had Buckie obeying him, walking with him and staying on command. All without shouting, bribing or threatening. Mel was fantastic and really knows his profession. Mel easily accomplished in one hour what we had been trying to accomplish for weeks with every method but the right one. And we weren’t successful at all. Since our consultation we have been able to put to use all of Mel’s suggestions and are very grateful for his help. Mel outlined the training he recommended for Buckie with the price, times etc. and put no pressure on us. He said we could call him if and when we needed him. We won’t know for a few weeks if we will be keeping the "granddog" for an extended period of time but we will absolutely sign up with Mel if we do. I would highly recommend Mel and Paramount dog training.

Description of Work:
They came out to my house and did some training for my dog.

Customer Comments:
I liked everything. It was awesome. He was able to train that I didn’t think could be trained. It took several training sessions. I would highly recommend him. It is a little pricey, but it is well worth it.

Description of Work:
Basic on-leash dog obedience and moderate to advanced off-leash obedience. Also educated owners on dog behavior and dog psychology.

Customer Comments:
We couldn’t have asked for a better trainer; Mel completed everything he promised and more. His training was worth every penny spent. Before Mel’s training, we were often frustrated with our dog’s lack of obedience and behavior. Now we thoroughly enjoy every minute, from walks to being at home. It has been a complete 180 degree turn-around. We would definitely recommend Mel and go back for further training if needed.

Description of Work:
Mel did an excellent job training me on how to train my dog. Before training, my dog would not obey commands, bark constantly in the car and jump on the couch to bark at anything going by the house. Everything is so much improved, not even a yip as we drive down the street. Before we started training, Mel spent almost an hour with my dog assessing his behavioral issues. Once training began, Mel would demonstrate what he wanted me to do and then have me practice it with my dog. He gave manageable homework assignments and put the instructions in writing. He did lessons at his place, my place, in my car and at a pet store. Each session was about an hour, and there were 7 or 8 sessions. In between lessons, I called Mel a few times with questions and problems. He responded quickly and always had an idea on how to correct the problem. The price included a leather leash, tab collar, and pinch collar.

Customer Comments:
Mel is very good at explaining exactly what to do and how to do it. His instructions are very easy to follow and he has lots of good tips for handling special situations. Mel was readily available to answer questions. My dog is 95% improved and on his way to being 100%. Mel had a solution to every problem that I raised. I recommend him to everyone I know that wants a well behaved dog and is willing to invest some time to have that happen.

Dog Training.

Customer Comments:
Mel’s quality of training is far more than I ever expected. Highly recommended and very professional. He delivers what he says he would do.

Description of Work:
Owner and trainer Mel McGrath provided one-on-one instruction for our family and our dog, Storm. We have a dominant male Doberman who was about six months old at the time we contacted Mel. He gave our dog an initial assessment at his new training facility in Strongsville. Thereafter, we took our dog to his facility once or twice before Mel started making "house calls" to work with our family. He REALLY knows dogs! Each time he would go through exercises with the dog and then make us go through them as well. He gave us "homework" and after we completed it (the dog would follow the new commands) would give us increasingly difficult commands. He gave us a video at one point so that we could understand better the way dogs "think" and how we needed to interact with them in order to gain respect and obtain obediance. Mel came to our house on multiple occasions and helped us realize our dog was smart, but dominant. He helped us get the "pack order"straight!

Customer Comments:
It went very well overall. Our dog is a well-behaved member of the household. We now have an infant at home and the dog is wonderful with him. He is a great watchdog and sleeps outside the bedrooms. Everybody feels safe. The best part is he follows command, verbal or hand signals, and is with the family at all times in the home. He is a great dog but in no small part because of the consistent, inciteful work done by Mel with Storm, and more importantly, with our family. One last point, Mel stuck with us even when at times we became frustrated with Storm. You could tell he sincerely cared about Storm and wanted to see him succeed for his own sake.

Description of Work:
Obedience and problem solving training for my uncontrollable German Shepherd.

Customer Comments:
Job 1: I have a 20 month old Shepherd that I hadn t been able to control. I wasn’t able to walk him for fear aggression towards other dogs/people. I had taken him to other classes but nothing seemed to help. Mel did the initial training to get my dog under control so that I could reinforce what we were learning. He is always ready to take over when he sees that I need his help. He is learning other commands also. I am now a happy dog mom. I still have a couple of session with Mel & I ll continue everything he has taught me. Job 2: A follow-up to previous report. I ve now finished my dog training. Besides teaching obedience, Mel McGrath solved several problems with my dog. Mel has turned an uncontrollable dog into a wonderful pet. My last session with Mel was in the Metroparks. My dog walked very calmly & ignored the other dogs/people. I m no longer afraid to take him for a walk. Mel has worked wonders with my dog. I d highly recommend him to anyone wanting a well trained dog.

Description of Work:
Paramount dog training was referred to me for my dog aggression problem with my German Shepherd female. Within four weeks my dog was completely different. She has many issues and was on death row literally hours away. I adopted her regardless of what problems she had. Mel McGrath did an evaluation and told me exactly what to expect. I knew after watching him during that hour, there was no other trainer for my dogs. I am also currently training two other dogs with Paramount.

Customer Comments:
On meeting Mel, he has a magic with dogs that is immediate. With in minutes of the evaluation, there is a complete difference in the animal. Pulling, out of control dogs are now looking up at him, sitting and waiting for the next command. He is in tune with the animals as he is with the owners. There is no problem he cannot help with and fix. Amazing! On seeing how miraculous the changes were in my shepherd (Lexi). I also had him brush up on training skills with my other shepherd (Luna). He trained her on my electric fence and reinforced off leash commands. I now am onto the 3rd dog in my pack and will explore protection training . Thank you Mel!!!!!
